Nine former members of the New People's Army (NPA) in Las Navas, Northern Samar have chosen to lay down their arms and begin a new chapter in their lives, marking another milestone in the government's peace and reintegration efforts under the whole-of-nation approach.

The former rebels were formally presented before the Municipal Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (MTF-ELCAC) of Las Navas on July 10, where they also surrendered several firearms as a gesture of their commitment to return to peaceful civilian life.

According to the Philippine Army's 8th Infantry Division (8ID), the surrender was the result of sustained collaboration among the Armed Forces of the Philippines, local government units, law enforcement agencies, and various stakeholders working together through the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC).

The development reflects the growing impact of government programs that combine security operations with community engagement, livelihood assistance, and access to basic services in conflict-affected communities.

Las Navas Mayor John Philbert Tan, Chairperson of the MTF-ELCAC, assured the former rebels that the local government would continue supporting their transition back to mainstream society through financial assistance, livelihood opportunities, and reintegration programs.

"The municipality remains steadfast in helping them rebuild their lives alongside their families and communities," Tan said.

Initial debriefing conducted by the military revealed that prolonged hardship, dwindling food supplies, and declining morale within the armed movement contributed to the decision of the former rebels to surrender and return to civilian life.

For many former combatants, the decision to leave armed struggle is not merely about ending participation in conflict, it is about reclaiming opportunities that years of violence had placed out of reach: education for their children, stable livelihoods, family reunification, and the chance to contribute positively to their communities.

The 8ID welcomed the return of the former rebels, emphasizing that the government's peace efforts extend beyond security measures and include healing, reconciliation, and sustainable development.

The military also reiterated its call for remaining members of armed groups to avail themselves of government reintegration programs and choose the path of peace.

The story of the nine former rebels from Northern Samar serves as a reminder that while conflict may divide communities, peace offers the possibility of rebuilding lives, restoring families, and creating opportunities for future generations.

Every firearm surrendered is more than a weapon laid down, it is a life redirected toward hope, dignity, and a future built not by conflict, but by peace.
