GENERAL SANTOS CITY — A strong earthquake struck off the coast of southern Mindanao on Monday morning, causing widespread alarm and prompting residents across General Santos City and neighboring provinces to evacuate buildings and move to open areas.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquake registered Magnitude 7.0 and struck off the coast of Sarangani at approximately 7:37 a.m. on June 8, 2026. The agency subsequently issued a tsunami warning for affected coastal areas.

The tremor was felt across much of Mindanao, with residents reporting strong shaking that lasted several seconds. Schools, offices, malls, and other establishments initiated emergency evacuation procedures as a precaution against possible aftershocks.

International monitoring agencies initially reported higher magnitudes for the earthquake. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimated the quake at Magnitude 7.8, while the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) initially reported it as high as Magnitude 8.2. Such differences are common during the early stages of earthquake monitoring as agencies refine their measurements.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also issued a tsunami advisory, warning that tsunami waves could affect portions of the Philippine coastline nearest the epicenter.

As of posting time, authorities were continuing damage assessments and monitoring the situation. No official reports of casualties or major infrastructure damage had been released.

PHIVOLCS advised residents, particularly those living in coastal communities, to follow evacuation instructions from local authorities, remain alert for possible aftershocks, and monitor official advisories.

The Philippines is situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most seismically active regions, making earthquakes a frequent occurrence throughout the archipelago.
