March 29, 2026 - Philippines

On a date historically associated with the Communist Party of the Philippines - New People’s Army’s armed struggle, former rebels across the Philippines transformed March 29 into a powerful national statement for peace, unity, and renewal.

Led by the Buklod Kapayapaan Federation Inc. (BKFI), thousands of former rebels, community members, youth, farmers, and government partners participated in coordinated activities nationwide to formally mark the National Day of Choosing Peace. This is a collective effort to reclaim the day from its past and redefine it as a symbol of healing and national solidarity.

A Nationwide Movement for Peace

Around 3,000 participants mobilized across multiple regions, engaging in peace rallies, forums, community dialogues, social outreach, and creative campaigns. These grassroots-driven initiatives reflected a shared commitment among former rebels to reject violence and actively contribute to rebuilding communities affected by decades of conflict.

BKFI President Noel Legaspi emphasized that the declaration is not merely symbolic, but a continuing call to action for sustained peacebuilding efforts. Legal Affairs Head Arian Ramos underscored the importance of pursuing truth, justice, and accountability, while Campaign Officer Richard Chiong highlighted that the movement carries “the stories of those who can no longer speak.”

Grassroots Voices Reject Violence

In Dingalan, Aurora, former rebels and residents of Barangay Ibona led a peaceful indignation rally condemning insurgency and its long-standing impact on local communities. Participants shared personal testimonies exposing the hardships and false promises experienced within the armed movement, reinforcing their decision to return to lawful society.

The rally highlighted the importance of community-government collaboration in sustaining peace and development. Local leaders emphasized that lasting peace requires collective responsibility, vigilance, and unity.

Youth Engagement in Eastern Visayas

In Tacloban City, more than 200 students gathered at the Eastern Visayas State University Main Campus for a peace forum organized by Uswag Sinirangan Bisayas Inc. The forum focused on raising awareness about recruitment tactics and promoting informed decision-making among the youth.

Former rebels shared firsthand accounts of their experiences, providing valuable insights into the realities of armed struggle and the importance of choosing peaceful alternatives. The event concluded with students signing a Manifesto of Support, affirming their commitment to reject violence and uphold peace.

Multi-Sectoral Mobilization in the Visayas

In Cebu and Bohol, multi-sectoral peace rallies were conducted with the participation of farmers, local government units, civil society organizations, and uniformed services. Activities emphasized the need to sustain development initiatives, strengthen community resilience, and denounce the adverse effects of armed conflict.

At Sitio Camarin, Barangay Bonbon in Aloguinsan, Cebu, around 250 participants gathered in a unified call for peace and progress. Earlier, a solidarity event at Fuente Osmeña Circle brought together representatives from various sectors, including youth, labor, and former rebels, highlighting the inclusive nature of the movement.

From Conflict to Transformation in Mindanao

In Makilala, North Cotabato, a “Run for Peace” gathered more than 500 participants, including former rebels who are now active peace advocates. Organized by the Makilala Integrated Peace Advocates Farmers Association (MIPAFA) in partnership with local government and security forces, the activity symbolized unity and transformation in a community once affected by insurgency.

Makilala’s declaration as an insurgency-free municipality in 2024 stands as a testament to the impact of sustained peace and development efforts. Former rebels who once participated in armed struggle now play a leading role in promoting stability, reintegration, and grassroots peacebuilding.

Regional Call for Unity in Bicol

In Masbate, the “Bagong Pag-asa” Peace Rally brought together former rebels, youth, and community members in a “Walk for Peace” followed by a program featuring testimonies and messages of support. The activity called on remaining members of armed groups to choose peace and reintegrate into society.

With participation from students and various government units, the event reinforced a growing regional consensus in favor of non-violence and inclusive development. The distribution of food packs at the end of the program further reflected the community-centered approach of the initiative.

Reclaiming the Narrative

The nationwide observance of the National Day of Choosing Peace marks a significant shift in narrative, one led by individuals who once took part in armed conflict but have since chosen a different path.

Through their actions, former rebels are not only rejecting violence but are actively shaping a future grounded in dignity, accountability, and shared progress. Their leadership in this movement highlights the critical role of reintegration and community engagement in achieving lasting peace.

As the country continues to confront the legacies of conflict, the message from March 29, 2026, especially from former rebels across the country, reverberates that peace is not just an alternative but a collective choice, and it is being made across the nation.
