Ed NoteThe arrest of Charlize “Ceeka” Garzon in Occidental Mindoro has sparked intense debate online, with activist networks portraying her as an “artist-organizer” and student leader targeted by the state. Yet the framing has also raised uncomfortable questions within circles familiar with the ideology of the revolutionary movement itself.

For decades, the Communist Party of the Philippines has taught that armed struggle is the “highest form of struggle,” elevating those who join guerrilla warfare as the movement’s most committed cadres. Against this backdrop, some observers are asking whether portraying figures like Ceeka merely as artists or activists unintentionally contradicts the movement’s own long-held narratives about sacrifice, militancy, and revolutionary commitment.
