SAN JOSE, Occidental Mindoro — National democratic organizations have launched a fresh propaganda campaign to rebrand a captured student as a civilian victim, following a deadly encounter in Occidental Mindoro on March 29, coinciding with the 57th founding anniversary of the New People's Army (NPA).

Groups led by Panday Sining Malate and Karapatan Southern Tagalog are demanding the "immediate release" of Charlize "Ceeka" Garzon, describing her as an "artist-activist" and "student leader" from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde who was "illegally arrested."

What We Know So Far

Based on verified reports, the following details have been confirmed:

  • Garzon was apprehended following a 20-minute heavy firefight in Sitio Salafay, Brgy. Monteclaro. Government troops encountered approximately 15 armed rebels during pursuit operations triggered by community reports of armed presence in the area.

  • The encounter resulted in the death of 1st Lt. Dean Oyando, while two other soldiers were wounded in the engagement.

  • At the specific site where Garzon was caught, troops recovered an M16 rifle, a hand grenade, and improvised explosive device (IED) components.

  • The clash occurred on March 29, the foundation day of the NPA, when by the movement to launch offensives to "celebrate" through armed violence.

A Different Take

Dianne, a former member of Anakbayan who later joined the NPA and is now a former rebel (FR) reintegrating into mainstream society, noted that the current outcry for Garzon follows the "pattern long employed by natdems in order to minimize the damage and twist the truth."

Dianne points out that the insistence by Panday Sining or Karapatan-ST that Garzon is merely a civilian ignores “uncomfortable truths” about youth being recruited into the underground movement.

"At the very least, she is doing a Tour of Duty (TOD) in the NPA. Denying this is insulting historical truths and basic logic—civilian researchers or simple activists do not end up in the middle of a 20-minute mountain firefight on the NPA’s anniversary, surrounded by IEDs and high-powered rifles," Dianne stated.

"In misrepresenting her as a civilian or an unarmed activist, natural questions arise: what is she doing there? Not another research surely?"

The Looming "Donate" Campaign

While full-scale fundraising has yet to saturate social media, Dianne warns the public to be wary of the next predictable step: the launch of "legal funds" or "humanitarian aid" posters.

She explains that these campaigns are often the second stage of the propaganda machinery. Based on her experience, these funds are frequently diverted from actual legal defense to sustain the logistics of the very underground units the individuals were captured from, effectively "laundering" public sympathy into financial support for the armed struggle.

An Undeniable Pipeline

The case of Garzon highlights the systematic "student-to-combatant" pipeline that the New Year’s Day encounter in adjacent Abra de Ilog exposed. It can be recalled that young women Jerlyn Doydora, Chantal Anicoche, Cristina Pasion, and Stephanie Borinaga were revealed to have been recruited through legal organizations, only to end up with armed combatants in  Mindoro.

Dianne emphasizes that the public is becoming increasingly aware of these tactics. "Eto yung problema kasi they think walang isip yung mga tao and would just accept their narrative," she said.

"Yung recruitment nila sa schools, from the national democratic organizations like Panday Sining, hanggang sa underground orgs like Kabataang Makabayan, hanggang TOD sa NPA units. Undeniable na yan."

By focusing solely on Garzon's status as a "student," national democratic organizations seek to invoke “middle-class sympathy” while conveniently omitting her presence in a combat zone, armed with an M16, on the very day her organization celebrates its founding through the blood of Filipino soldiers.

This is a developing story. Please stay tuned for updates on this.
